Cubana Chant Judy Kessler
Cubana Chant
In this performance of Cubana Chant, I pay homage to the late great jazz pianist, Ray Bryant (1931-2011). An influential pianist, composer and arranger, his style reflected influences of Bop, Blues, Boogiewoogie, Gospel, and R&B. This particular piece opens with a call and response phrasing, the latter in open voicings which give it a gospel sound. It is almost mournful in the opening, a crying out and hoping that one is heard. It develops into an exciting Latin/Cuban rhythm where one can almost imagine a community coming together to unify in their efforts. It sizzles to its tag and ending octaves. I hope you enjoy this performance!
